Scholarships & Student Achievement

The Rotary Club of Bellingham Foundation provides almost $100,000 in scholarships every year in addition to recognizing students of excellence in our Student-of-the-Month program, our Rotary Youth Exchange scholarship, and our Youth Adventures in Leadership (Y.A.I.L.) scholarship.
Scholarships

The Foundation allots a certain amount for scholarships through the local Whatcom Dollars for Scholars program as well as named scholarships to be awarded based on agreements with donors. The Mischaikow Scholarship is awarded to an excellent student with one or both parents born in a foreign country of excellence. Phil Millard Memorial Athletic Scholarships are awarded to local students excelling at both athletics and academics. Additional scholarship funds are provided to the Bellingham Technical College, Whatcom Community College, and Western Washington University Foundations for named scholarships with specific criteria. The Rotary Club of Bellingham Foundation, a 501(c)3, receives Club member donations as well as donations from the community.

Rotary Youth Exchange Scholarship

The Rotary Youth Exchange program can be thought of as a scholarship, covering many of the expenses a student may encounter during their year abroad. The hosting Rotary Club covers room and board by coordinating with host families, school arrangements, a small stipend of about US $100 monthly and other support. All in all, the Rotary Youth Exchange program (the value of the above) is valued at more than $25,000 in most countries.
Student-of-the-Month

Our Club recognizes high school students of excellence across a number of disciplines in a recognition event once per quarter. Students from Bellingham High School, Options High School, Sehome High School, and Squalicum High School are recognized for Math, Science, English, Music, Art, Drama, and more!
Youth Adventures in Leadership (Y.A.I.L.)

The Youth Adventures In Leadership program helps students n the 10th and 11th grade (ages 15-17) discover new skills and improve personal leadership development. Rotary fundamentals are taught such as learning the value of teamwork and understanding Service above Self, and the event also encourages building lasting relationships with like-minded individuals as well as provides an immersive learning environment to foster growth. Interested? Y.A.I.L. is orchestrated by our Rotary District and our Club sponsors a certain number of students to attend for free each year. Please reach out to learn more about the upcoming Y.A.I.L. program and see if a scholarship is available.
